Table with candles, Agua Florida, crystals and lit sage bundle for a spiritual cleansing

Energetic and Spiritual Cleansing

Somewhere out there, someone is burning palo santo right now. Walking room to room with the little bundle in hand, face set in spiritual concentration, window cracked open so the bad energy can leave. Certain they are cleansing.

If you asked them what exactly they’re moving, they wouldn’t know. But cleansing, definitely. They saw it online.

The problem is that palo santo does not cleanse. In the traditions it comes from, it blesses, creates atmosphere, attracts. Using it to cleanse is like spraying pine air freshener to scrub a bathroom: the room smells good, but the dirt is exactly where it was.

This is true of nearly everything in the spiritual cleansing kit that circulates online. Cinnamon attracts. Bay laurel amplifies. Rue seals. Palo santo blesses. Each of them has a real function, just rarely the one people think. Mixing them without knowing what they do is like using broccoli to patch a wall because it contains calcium. The calcium is real. The wall ends up green.

What actually cleanses has been doing so for centuries, quietly, without attractive packaging or Instagram stories. Without an influencer endorsement. Without a quartz crystal in the frame for the photo. It exists, it works, and part of it you can do yourself. But first you need to understand what actually gets dirty, and why.

* * *

Everyone gets dirty. It is not a sign that something is wrong with you or that you attract harm. It is the normal consequence of existing in the world alongside other people, in spaces that carry history, holding your own emotions. Asking why you’d get spiritually dirty is like asking why your shoes get muddy when you go outside. Because the street exists. And so do you.

The most common sources are not exotic. Work, commuting, a conversation that ends and leaves a strange aftertaste you can’t name. That person who asks how you’re doing with a smile, and you arrive home exhausted without having done anything physical. The atmosphere of a meeting where nothing particularly bad was said, but something in the air was rotten.

The evil eye deserves its own paragraph because it circulates more misunderstood than almost anything else. It is not folklore or old wives’ tales. It is the real effect of envy or ill intent concentrated on a person, and it works even when the sender has no conscious awareness of what they are doing. No deliberate intention is required. The feeling is enough.

Spaces carry too. Houses, offices, hospitals, hotels have memory. What has happened in a place leaves a charge that remains until someone moves it. There are houses that weigh on you from the moment you walk in. Spending time in a charged space is enough to carry part of it with you, just as leaving somewhere smoky leaves the smell in your clothes even if you never lit a cigarette.

Not everything that needs cleansing comes from outside. Sustained fear, anger that never gets expressed, grief that stays locked inside for months: these also produce density. And that density is yours.

Then there are intrusions and energetic parasites: elements that install themselves in the field, do not belong there, and feed off it. These are not new concepts. Shamanic work, magic, and ancient spiritual knowledge have recognized and treated them for millennia. What is new is the number of people carrying them without knowing it.

How do they show up? Sometimes with a specific signal: a sharp, intense headache with no physical cause. The senses go dull, the episode fades, but the exhaustion it leaves behind is out of proportion to anything that happened. As if something consumed energy all at once. When something installs itself and stays, that sensation comes back. Over time it stops feeling like an isolated episode and starts feeling like part of the landscape, which is exactly what it wants.

There are quieter signals too: a persistent sense of imbalance with no explanation, unexplained weight loss, mood shifts too abrupt to match any real circumstance. The feeling that something is draining from inside, even when everything looks fine on the outside.

None of this is a diagnosis. But when these symptoms keep repeating and the usual methods don’t shift them, it is worth considering that something more may be present. Because if there is, a shower and a salt bath will not be enough.

There are two kinds of people who look for a cleansing. The one who calls someone who knows, expecting that afterwards the money will flow and their partner will come back. And the one who does it alone at home with a tutorial, expecting exactly the same thing. In both cases the mistake is identical: confusing cleansing with solving.

A cleansing removes energetic disturbances, foreign loads, things that cloud judgment, elements that prevent you from moving normally. All of that can be cleansed. And yes, from a clean field, stuck things have more room to move.

But there is a big difference between “I am in better condition for things to happen” and “things happen on their own.”

A cleansing puts you in a better position to act. The acting is still yours. Working on a loaded field is like trying to paint a wall without preparing it first: the result won’t hold, no matter how good the paint is.

Now comes the part very few people say out loud.

There is no point walking out of a thorough cleansing only to go back to the same sources of contamination. Two of them deserve to be named plainly: sexual contact with certain people, and the use of substances.

Sexual relationships create direct energetic contact with the other person: they connect your structure with everything that person carries. Their history, their parasites, their links to third parties. This is not moralism, and it is not an argument for abstinence: it is mechanics. A satisfying encounter with someone who carries nothing unusual will not dirty you. But when there is discomfort, when something in you says this person is not right for you even if you can’t explain why, when the encounter leaves you drained instead of well, something has transferred. And that does need cleansing.

Substances open doors. They alter the field in ways that allow in what would not enter under normal conditions, and those doors do not always close on their own. When substances are mentioned here, all of them are included, without exception. Alcohol deserves specific mention because it is the most normalized and the one no one associates with these effects. One drink is not the problem. The problem is when any of these substances stops being occasional and becomes part of the daily landscape. At that point the field never quite closes. And what doesn’t close, invites.

Cleansing is not one single thing. There are methods that work from the outside using physical elements, techniques that work from within at deeper layers, and situations that require direct extraction of what has become lodged. Not everything works for everything.

Let’s start with what you can do yourself, right now.

The shower

Not as a metaphor. As a real tool. Water carries away what is unwanted, revives, resets. Done with intention, it is enough for daily maintenance. A small habit with real effect: washing from elbows to hands after spending time around many people or in charged spaces. No elaborate ritual needed. Just presence.

The bath

The basic formula: water, sea salt, hyssop, and an invocation over the water. Not a positive affirmation or a pretty intention: a weighted prayer, the kind that has been used for this exact purpose since the beginning of recorded time, across very different cultures. Other elements can be added, vinegar to cut and neutralize, other herbs, but water plus salt plus hyssop plus invocation is already a serious cleansing bath.

The most important element is not in the ingredients: it is in the attention. The focus has to be on feeling the water pulling, dissolving, carrying away what is not yours. Without that, it is a bath with salt. With it, it is something else.

When you get out, let the water drain on its own and skip the towel: air dry. This is what allows the properties of the bath to absorb and a natural layer of protection to form. The towel interrupts it. The air completes it.

Resin incense

A distinction almost nobody makes: stick incense smells good and sets an atmosphere, but its energetic effect is so subtle it can almost be ignored. Resin incense burned over charcoal is another matter entirely. Frankincense, copal, myrrh, and benzoin have documented use as purifiers that predates any trend by centuries, across traditions that share nothing with each other and arrived at the same conclusions independently. That is not coincidence.

For spaces, move counterclockwise while blowing the smoke into the corners. For people and objects, pass the smoke with clear intention of what you want to draw out. Simple, ancient, effective. And no, palo santo is not on this list.

The egg cleansing

One of those methods that generates the most skepticism in people who don’t know it and the most surprise in those who try it for the first time. The egg absorbs residual energy, negativity, and some parasites with an effectiveness that has no elegant explanation but has centuries of consistent use behind it. It is applied to the body while directing it toward what you want removed, then broken open. There are variations: quick cleansing of the back of the neck, full body cleansing, severing an energetic tie. It is especially effective for dense loads that are felt physically even when there is no physical cause.

That is as far as what you can do on your own goes. And for a lot of situations, it is enough.

But there is a level these methods do not reach. Intrusions, parasites, ties that remain active even when a relationship ended years ago: those do not leave with a shower or a salt bath. Not because the methods are poor, but because they were not designed for that. It is like trying to remove a splinter with water. Water is good. But for the splinter you need a different tool.

Extraction techniques exist across different traditions, not only the shamanic. Some magical approaches reach points where shamanic work does not, and vice versa. No single tradition holds everything. What determines whether something works at this level is real knowledge, power, and precision in whoever applies it. And that is not in any tutorial.

* * *

You do not need to wait until you are overwhelmed to cleanse. The logic is the same as bathing: you do not wait until you smell bad to get in the shower.

But there are moments when the body gives signals. You have felt a heaviness for weeks that does not match anything specific. Your head will not clear even after sleeping. Things go wrong in sequence. You are irritable, scattered, with a kind of fog over everything that is not sadness but is not being well either. Or you simply know, without being able to explain it, that something is not yours.

Those signals do not lie. And most of the time a proper cleansing is enough to shift it.

Most of the time.

Because there are situations where the basic methods do not reach. There are things that have settled in and will not leave with salt and water. There are loads that have been there so long a person no longer recognizes them as foreign. There are ties that remain active even when the relationship has been over for years. For that, there is another level of work: more precise, deeper, with tools that are not in any tutorial. When it is needed, there is no substitute.

Cleansing is not the end. It is the beginning. What comes after, how to protect yourself, how to avoid loading up with the same things again, is a conversation that deserves its own space. And we will have it.

And if in the meantime you sense something that is not moving on its own, that the basic methods are not reaching where they need to reach, I can help you see it clearly. No nonsense, no smoke.
